Over Christmas and my Birthday i am an avid gel nail wearer, i love the length of time that they look good for and i like that i can essentially have nail extensions as i am awful at growing my nails. However this level of nail abuse comes at a price, which i am still paying. Having gel nails for so long has left my nails: dry, peeling and weak which is not a good combination. For reference my birthday was in February so my nails have been recovering for a long time! Since then i have stopped having gel nails and i've stuck to good old nail polish. Obviously the best way to let them recover would be to have nothing on my nails but if you've ever had nails taken off you know they leave your nails looking hideous. So i have been using nail polish to cover up my nails and so that i don't feel so bad about them.
Everyone has gone mad for chrome nails. Not too long ago you couldn't even scroll through your Facebook feed without everyone trying to sell you the powder to be able to recreate the nail trend from the comfort of your own home. I've always found with chrome nails that they just don't last! You pay around £30 to get it done for it to look crap after a week which defeats the purpose of having your nails done in the first place. However if you wanted that smooth finish that was the only way to get it. Now companies have cottoned on to the idea of chrome nails and have tried to create a polish equivalent. I am going to say it now, the finish isn't the same, the polishes always look chunkier and you don't get quite the same finish but it is bloody close. Close enough that i have been using them instead of getting my nails done. If you read my monthly favourites for July then you will know i have been loving a certain nail polish more than any others and it comes from Sally Hansen.
I am very fickle when it comes to nail polish as i know i can change it quite easily and my favourite is very dependent on the time of year; during the winter i love a classic nude or more berry tones. For summer i usually stick to brighter shades as i know i will have a little bit of a tan (fake of course) but 200 Powder Room by Sally Hansen has changed my mind. It is a sort of a light rose chrome which can shift between silver or pink depending on how much light there is. Of course there is a shimmer in it but it is very fine so it is the closest i've seen to looking like a genuine chrome. It has a good shine and looks very glossy for around a week after it has initially been applied. The overall look of this polish is stunning and i am very pleased i spotted this one on Fashion Mumblr. I mean you have to give credit when it is due. On a side note if you want a good blog/youtube to follow, check out Fashion Mumblr because it is goals.
Not only is the actual shade beautiful but it is equally matched with the formula. When i saw this polish on Fashion Mumblr i didn't know that it is part of the Color Therapy range which has Argan Oil within the formula to help nourish the nails. When i read this i was sold.
It claims on the Sally Hansen website that the formula will last 'Up to 10 days of fade-proof, chip-resistant wear' I'm not sure it lasts 10 days on me but definitely a week. The colour does stay bold and intact but the shine diminishes which makes it look slightly faded. If it lasted 10 days it would be a miracle but a week is still amazing. Some of the more expensive polishes i own don't even make it a day so a week is pretty impressive. You also don't need to use a base coat as that would interfere with the Argan oil having an effect which suits me as i am lazy and do not want to wait for multiple coats to dry. To build up the colour i would recommend two coats but that is pretty standard for most nail polish.
One negative thing i will point out is that if there are any cracks or raised bits on your nails it will highlight it just because it is a lighter shade. This isn't a problem but it can take away from the smooth chrome look that ideally you would like. As i said, my nails are in gel recovery mode, so they have ridges and bumps on them so using this polish can look slightly messy.
I have been using this throughout the whole of August, taking it off on a Sunday and then reapplying it the following week and i think i can see a difference in my nails. As they are so damaged i can't expect overnight results. I have noticed that they do look healthier when i don't have any polish on, the cracks and dryness are not quite as defined. My nails are still quite brittle but as i said, i can't expect it to work miracles. At the end of the day it is still a polish and therefore it is full of chemicals, this one just has a bit of Argan oil mixed in. It probably helps not to cause any more damage rather than completely repairing everything about your nails.
If you are a chrome nail lover this one is for you. If you paid to have a set of nails finished with chrome you would pay around £30 whereas this was a mere £8.99 and you can use this hundreds of times rather than just the once. Currently it is £2 off Sally Hansen on the Boots website, making them £6.99. The other good thing is that even though gels are longer lasting; this can easily be taken off and topped up so when it looks dodgy you can change it. If you are not a fan of this colour they do a few other chrome finishes but after taking a look at them i have to say i don't really like any of the other shades. However if you do not care for the chrome finish but like the idea of the colour therapy range, they do 38 different shades as part of this range so there is pretty much something for everyone. Prior to this i had only tried one Sally Hansen nail polish but i have to say i am impressed.
