When making decisions about bridal jewelry, however, don't feel boxed in by tradition. There are no rules - feel free to start your own tradition. Here are some alternate choices that are just as beautiful:
- Some engagement rings - rings that are wider or with a large number of diamonds - look great without a band. Many brides opt for an engagement ring only and don't wear a band.
- Just the opposite occurs, too - many brides wear only a band. Maybe they choose a wider diamond band or one with an intricate design that is stunning on its own. Often this is a work-related choice. Those in health-related fields may have to wear gloves and don't want to risk damaging a higher rising ring.
- Some women take bands a step further. Over time they may acquire several different bands, wearing them interchangeably.
- Some brides expand on the traditional engagement ring and wedding band by stacking them with a second band. This is a beautiful option, especially with diamond bands on each side of the engagement ring. Some brides begin with this and others add a second band later, perhaps on the first anniversary.
- Guys have options, as well. Men often worry about damaging their wedding band at work. A great solution is to select two: a precious metal band - even one with diamonds - for the ceremony and when not at work; and a more rugged band to work in. Alternative metals like tungsten, titanium or cobalt are excellent for this. This way the precious metal band is saved from rough wear and will last a lifetime - or several, to be passed down to future generations.
